Science
Continual advancements in science and technology are key components in the progression and development of societies. The focus on capacity building in these areas is aimed at improving both human and institutional capacities and facilitating a broader participation in the evolvement of society. Security on a global scale is enhanced therefore, through science, sustainable development and the improvement in the well being and management of the environment.
Women and Science:
UNESCO through its Science and Technology Education (STE) initiative continues to work in advancing the ideal of equality of education, not considering factors of gender, race, and ethnicity. Its programme seeks to promote women in the area of science and technology. It recognizes that in order to facilitate women in these areas, specific objectives are achieved through a devised training module for the purpose of motivating girls to embark in these areas.
Natural Disaster Reduction:
An area of emphasis of UNESCO has been to seek improvement in the areas of prevention and preparedness of natural disasters, which scientists have found to be influenced by humans. Its aim is to enhance the approach of disseminating information and educating the public, which is achieved through the improvement of facilities, infrastructure and institutions carrying out training and research.
Renewable Energy:
Energy conservation is a priority and critical to the standard of living and conditions globally. Efforts are being made in promoting and developing renewable energies, in consort with the diversification in the sources of energy, with the focus of improving the conditions for small island nations and developing countries. Emphasis is being made in the development of inter-governmental scientific programmes relating to water resources with the International Hydrological Programme (IHP); the ecosystem with the Man and Biosphere Programme (MAP) and Coastal Regions and Small Islands (CSI) platform.
